Winnowing the Competition By the third week of october much of the forest at the
mid to higher elevations of the Great Smoky Mountains
is at, or near, peak color. As the winds pick up and
nighttime temperatures drop with passing cold fronts,
some trees on the mountainside have relinquished their
colorful cloaks in deference to the comming winter.

Winning the Gold The sunset views from Clingmans Dome in the Great Smoky
Mountains are undoubtably some of the best in the
country. The topography of the area and the natural
blue mist pervading the area provide just the right
ingredients to create dramatic sunset scenes.

Waiting Their Turn As autumn reaches its peak in the Great Smoky
Mountains, most of the vegetation is in full fall
regalia. A notable exception are the many wild
rhododendron bushes , waiting demurely in the shaded
areas of the forest, their moment of glory will be
next summer ,when they will enchant the forest with
their brilliant white or purple flowers.
